Won't You Be My Neighbor
The story of a man who believed that love was the answer to everything.
I just last night watched the documentary about Fred Rogers. It was a stunning piece film making. It wasn't that in terms of its ability to create a beautiful shot or to make you realize something deeper than what was originally intended. No, it is the story of a man whose goal was simple from the start.
And yet in these trying times I can't believe that we have become less in need of the message of Mr. Rogers and his neighborhood.
In this Documentary we are given a message. And that message is to love those around us unconditionally. I know this is hard to do but I believe that in these times this may be the most profound message.
Won't You Be My Neighbor lacks snark or cynicism or crassness. It is the story of a man who believed that love could conquer all. And this is not romantic love. It is the purest love and respect of all humans. And as we all walk through a world where being divided is what defines us maybe a little love could go a long way. Or at least that is what this beautiful and empathetic documentary leaves us hopeful for.
I can't help but have watched this movie and thought long and hard about how I treat everyone around me and how everyone around me treats everyone else.
It was both refreshing and heart-warming to watch something that made me believe that love and caring was something that could be anything more than cynical let alone a version of the world that we all belong to live in.
And to send those messages sent around youth, who is eventually is our future leaves me hopeful for here we are headed.
For if the love Fred Rogers was hoping to give to all could be real, maybe we could find a way to live on in peace and decency.
